Thyssenkrupp Secures EU Approval For Phased Hydrogen Steel Transition Plan

Thyssenkrupp's tkH2Steel near-zero carbon steel project gets revised EU approval. A mixed natural gas and green hydrogen roadmap stabilises low-carbon structural steel supply for European construction, bridges and industrial buildings.

Thyssenkrupp Steel has obtained revised approval from the European Commission for its landmark tkH2Steel decarbonisation project based in Duisburg, Germany. The updated regulatory framework allows a phased transition route using a blend of natural gas and green hydrogen at the early operation stage, instead of an immediate full switch to 100% green hydrogen. The adjustment responds to slower rollout of hydrogen infrastructure and higher-than-projected green hydrogen costs across Europe.

The high-quality structural steel output from this new facility will supply the European construction sector, covering steel bridge engineering, industrial steel buildings, logistics distribution parks, large public venues and modular construction projects.

This flexible phased plan reduces financing and technical risks for the whole decarbonisation journey. For steel fabricators, main contractors and developers, it creates more predictable, long-term supply of low-carbon structural steel that complies with EU CBAM and regional green building procurement standards.

Industry stakeholders regard the revised scheme as a practical model for large-scale green steel transformation across Europe, balancing climate targets with real-world hydrogen supply limitations.
